Emily Coates

I came to know Emily while touring as the sound engineer for Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project. She was dancing for the company during our spectacular tour of Asia in 2001. Emily had an extensive ballet career which began as a corps member of the New York City Ballet, dancing for such greats as Angelin Preljocaj and Jerome Robbins. However the allure of a more humanist side of modern dance and the offer to join the White Oak company pulled her into the works of Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, and Mark Morris to name a few. Emily has an incredible sense of independence in thought and motivations, illustrated by her recent decision to enroll at Yale University as a full time student. At the time of this photo, 2002, Emily was performing at the Pillow with the Twyla Tharp company. Twyla had asked her to be in a duet, "Known By Heart Duet", which required pointe technique. So it was during that week for the first time in five years she laced up her pointe shoes.
