Lionel Hoche is the artistic director of his own French company MéMé BaNjO. Before starting his company, he’d been a freelance choreographer for such companies as Nederlands Dans Theater, the Rome Opera Ballet, National Ballet of Finland, and the Monte-Carlo Ballet. Lionel becomes fully engaged in his creations, and gives a strong impression that he is tuned into every aspect of the production’s elements. During the company’s performance week he eventually joined the dancers on stage while covering for an injured company member. Any time I’ve seen this happen, it’s always fascinating to witness the choreographer take on the dual-nervous role of performer and parent of the work.
